Upcycling Is Key

A study by the University of Florida environmental engineering department found that electronic gadgets ranging from cell phones to computer keyboards often release enough lead in laboratory tests to be classified as hazardous waste under federal Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
In addition, keyboards are coated in a material called brominated flame retardant. Plastics coated in flame retardants are dangerous if they end up in landfills and incinerators. The flame retardant can slowly seep off and mix with rainwater and soil, and if it is burned, it releases dangerous chemicals including dioxins.
Before you discard your old computer keyboard, consider these upcycling ideas.
